In the beginning of December, the trees surrounding Mirror Lake on the South Oval are illuminated by thousands of white lights. A lighting ceremony takes place beside the lake in Browning Amphitheater that finishes with attendees walking down to the lake where they light candles and sing “Carmen Ohio.”  In 2003, the Ohio Staters, Inc., whose mission it is to preserve traditions on campus, started a new ritual of keeping the lights up through mid-February to brighten an otherwise dark part of campus on long winter nights.
