The Ohio State University

The Buckeye first appeared in costume as the OSU mascot at OSU vs. Minnesota on October 30, 1965.  The nut with human legs was created by the student organization Ohio Staters, Inc.  On November 18 of that same year, he was given the name “Brutus,” from the winning entry of a campus-wide contest to name the mascot. Though his appearance had undergone many changes, in 1982, Brutus was given his look that has stuck with him until this day.

In 1975, Brutus Buckeye was officially placed under the supervision of the OSU Cheerleading squad, where he has remained.
