Skull Session
St. John Arena
410 Woody Hayes Drive
Columbus, OH 43210
Skull Session has been a tradition since 1957, when the band began allowing fans to watch their “Skull Session.” It is the final time for the members to focus on their performance and play the music while mentally going through each marching maneuver. This pregame pep rally begins promptly two hours before kick-off, right after Ohio High School marching bands finish warming up the crowd. When the OSUMB marches into St. John Arnea, the stands roar. Cheer groups perform until the big moment when the OSU Football team, on their walk from their hotel to Ohio Stadium, makes an appearance. Coaches and a senior player address the crowd in St. John Arena before the band’s performance, which occurs before the game and during half-time. Over 10,000 people pack into St. John Arena on home game-day Saturdays. Although the OSUMB enters St. John two hours before kick-off, doors open four hours before kick-off and it is a given that swarms of fans will arrive that early to secure seats. Concession stands are open at the same time and continue to serve until near the end of the performance.

OSUMB Uniform Inspection and Rehearsal
Approximately five hours before kick-off the OSU Marching Band filters out of the Band Center inside of Ohio Stadium and makes its way over to the practice field on the south end of the stadium. The band assembles according to rank to undergo a ROTC-style uniform inspection, followed by complete run-throughs and tweaking of the day’s pre-game and half-time shows.

For 26 years, up until 2008, Hineygate was billed as the largest tailgate party in the world. Located just north of Ohio Stadium, in the former Holiday Inn on Lane parking lot, the party was sponsored by Columbus radio station WTVN and Budweiser. And when local rock band The Danger Brothers performed, beer and bras would fly! In 2009, the property was taken over by OSU and WTVN recently moved their party (without the Danger Brothers) down Lane Avenue to The Thirsty I.

After the loss of the original Hineygate The Danger Brothers needed somewhere to continue their party, so they now perform during and after games at the iconic Varsity Club.

In an attempt to revitalize the former Hineygate, The Danger Brothers now perform at Hineyfest, located in the parking lot of Across the Field. Aside from food and drink, the game is televised on a jumbo screen, and a free shuttle will take you to and from the game if you’re in no condition to make the one mile walk.
