DANCE MARATHON

Every winter, Dance Marathon (DM) raises several hundred thousand dollars for charity (they passed the $1M mark in 2011.) Started in 1975, the 30-hour dance marathon attracts thousands of students, staff and faculty to dance for a cause. All participants register as “dancer couples” and must raise a minimum of $800 to dance. Bands play, and school music ensembles perform throughout the event, which is held at the Norris University Center. Celebrities sometimes pay a visit during the event, as do famous Chicago athletes. The entire community is encouraged to get involved during Dance Marathon weekend by participating in affiliated events such as the “DM Spa,” set up in the Norris University Center, and running in the DM 5K for charity.
