MINNESOTA vs. WISCONSIN

PAUL BUNYAN’S AXE

The Paul Bunyan Axe trophy represents one of the most-played rivalries in Division I football, dating back to 1830. The winner of the Wisconsin-Minnesota game used to play for “The Slab of Bacon”, a flat piece of wood with a “W” or an “M” carved into it (depending on which way you looked at it). The Slab of Bacon mysteriously disappeared in 1943, and the trophy was replaced in 1948 with Paul Bunyan’s Axe. The score of each game is painted onto the axe each year.
