SEAT FOR FRITZ CRISLER

For every home game, Michigan reserves one seat in the stadium, in an undisclosed location, for former head coach (1938-1947) and athletics director (1941 to 1968), Fritz Crisler. The tradition was started in the 1950’s, and since then, all Michigan Stadium capacity figures have ended with a ‘1’, supposedly to honor Chrisler, who  himself was the Athletic Director when this tradition began.

Fritz Crisler was “the father of two-platoon football,” (separate offense and defense players), and introduced the famous winged helmet design to the UM football team uniform.
