MICHIGAN STATE vs. PENN STATE

LAND GRANT TROPHY

When PSU joined the Big Ten in 1993, their rival was “designated” as MSU. There was never any real reason for this rivalry, other than it being declared by the Big Ten to exist due to them being the two oldest land grant universities in the country. Despite the lack of any real rivalry history, the two teams have still played for the Land Grant Trophy every year. Arguably the ugliest award in the Big Ten, if not all of college football, the trophy– designed by former Michigan State coach George Perles–resembles a large wooden piece of cabinetry adorned with a statuette of Sparty, the Nitney Lion and photographs of MSU’s Beaumont Tower and PSU’s Old Main.
