MICHIGAN STATE vs. MICHIGAN

PAUL BUNYAN TROPHY

In 1953, former Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams commissioned The Paul Bunyan Trophy. A symbol of in-state dominance, the trophy is a four-foot wooden statue of the legendary Paul Bunyan planted on a map of the state of Michigan and flanked by two flags– one with the Michigan “M” and the other with the Michigan State “S.”

During the week leading up to the MSU-UM game, members of the Spartan Marching Band go on “Sparty Watch“, keeping vigil of the Sparty Statue in order to keep away potential vandals.
