University of Iowa

Nile Kinnick is the University of Iowa’s only Heisman Trophy winner. In his 1939 Heisman speech, Kinnick lamented about his time at the University of Iowa, “I thank God I was warring on the gridirons of the Midwest and not on the battlefields of Europe,” Kinnick was later killed during a training flight crash off the coast of Venezuela in 1943 at the age of 24. His body was never found. The football stadium was named in his honor in 1972, and today, before every home game, a video of Nile Kinnick’s Heiman Trophy Winner speech is played on the scoreboard.
