NILE KINNICK STATUE

On the south side of the stadium sits a 20-foot-tall bronze statue of Nile Kinnick, the University of Iowa’s only Heisman Trophy winner (1939) who was later killed in 1943 during WWII, despite being offered an NFL contract. Since the statue’s inception in 2006, Hawkeye football players have continued the tradition of touching the helmet that sits at the statue’s feet before they enter the locker room. Every coin in the Big Ten conference that is flipped before kick-off has an image of Nile Kinnick on it, proving him an inspirational and respected figure in all of the Big Ten.
