RIVALRY TRADITIONS

With the creation of two Big Ten Divisions, Legends and Leaders, some of the traditional rivalry games have unfortunately been diminished, given that the teams will no longer play each other every year. Illinois will keep its annual meeting with OSU for the Illibuck Trophy, and Purdue for the Cannon Trophy. However,  Illinois will lose its annual meeting with Northwestern for the Land of Lincoln Trophy.

ILLINOIS vs. NORTHWESTERN

“SWEET SIOUX” TOMAHAWK (1945-2008) In 1945, the staff at both schools’ newspapers conceived the idea of a wooden Indian trophy to commemorate the winner of the rivalry game. “Sweet Sioux”, as the trophy was named, was stolen from Northwestern in 1946, and was replaced with a wooden Tomahawk trophy that was used until 2008, after it was retired in accordance to a 2005 NC...
